Wohl über die dunkle Heide.
Hat mir niemand Ade gesagt.
Ade! Mein Gesell' war Lieb' und Leide!
Auf der Straße steht ein Lindenbaum,
Da hab' ich zum ersten Mal im Schlaf geruht!
Unter dem Lindenbaum,
Der hat seine Blüten über mich geschneit,
Da wußt' ich nicht, wie das Leben tut,

Der måtte jeg ta avskjed med dette mitt aller kjæreste sted!
Å øyne blå, hvorfor så dere på meg?
Nå skal jeg ha evig lidelse og sorg.
Jeg gikk ut i den stille natten
langt over de mørke heiene.
Ingen bød meg farvel.
Farvel! Mine følgesvenner var kjærlighet og lidelse.
Ved veien står det et lindetre,
der falt jeg for første gang i rolig søvn!
Under lindetreet,
som lot sine blomster snø over meg,
Der visste jeg ikke hvordan verden fortsatte,
