In front of the chalet upon the alpine meadow, Where the heavens smile so wondrously blue, Where the water-springs flow And plunge down to the valley, There I picked you the bouquet Of forget-me-nots, And tied the bright alpine roses to it as well. In front of the chalet there in the evening glow You said how much your heart was inclined to me. Where the flowers sprout, And the birds greet us, Flowers burgeoned in my breast as well, Birds sang, full of the joy of springtime. In front of the chalet upon the alpine meadow The storms now blow mightily and roughly; No water-springs flow, No flowers sprout; We took farewell a long time ago, And I only know that it is winter.
