   Michel, was träumst du?
"Freitraud im Rosenkranze
Tanzt ganz allein.
Freitraud hat goldene Haare
So so so fein;
Freitraud hat Augen klare
Wie Sonnenschein;
Ich möchte Freitraud küssen, 
Und 's kann nicht sein."

Michel mit der Lanze
Reitet durch den dunkeln Tann.
   Michel, was träumst du?
"Kann ich nicht sein beim Tanze,
Was tu ich dann? 
Ich such mir eine Drachen, 
Den geh' ich an. 
Will ihm den Garaus machen,
Recht als ein Mann.
Will zeigen, daß ich fechten
Und siegen kann."

   Michael, of what are you dreaming?

Is dancing by herself.
Freitraud has golden hair
So, so, so fine;
Freitraud has clear eyes
Like sunshine;
I would like to kiss Freitraud,
And it cannot be."

Michael with his lance
Is riding through the dark forest.
   Michael, of what are you dreaming?
"If I cannot be at the dance,
What shall I do then?
I shall find myself a dragon,
And attack him.
I am going to finish him off,
Right properly as a man.
I want to show that I can fight
And be victorious."
