Quando nel buio gli orologi battono prossimi sì che par di averli in cuore, e con tremule voci van le cose chiedendosi: « Sei tu? », più non sono colui che si destava allo spuntar dell'alba: ma la Notte mi dona un nuovo nome, e con un fondo brivido l'apprenderebbe chi nel chiaro giorno meco scambiò parola. Ogni porta dell'anima, sospinta, dentro di me si schiude. E allora io so che non dilegua nulla nell'universo mondo: non la preghiera e il gesto (troppo grevi a svanir sono le cose!) e sento attorno a me sempre persistere - viva - l'infanzia mia, e non avverto più d'essere solo. L'immensa moltitudine che fu prima di me, che l'aspra lotta lungi da me sostenne, ordiva lenta, infaticabilmente, la trama ond'io son vivo. E se m'inclino a te, per dirti piano: « Tanto ho sofferto... » , ascolta: non so qual voce ignota rimormora con me le mie le parole.
