Du schaukelst träumend deinen Nachen,
als wär die Welt ein stiller See;
du hast nicht acht auf Ziel und Lauf,
und einmal musst du doch erwachen . . 

Und lernst du Weinen auch im Lachen,
und tut das Leben noch so weh:
Du banger Träumer, Augen auf!
Die Welt ist doch nur für die Wachen!

Dreamily you rock your barque,
as if the world were a calm lake;
you pay no attention to the goal and journey,
but, nevertheless, sometime you must awaken . .

And though you learn weeping even in laughing,
and though life hurts ever so much:
you anxious dreamer, open your eyes!
For the world is only for those who are awake!
