J'aime les grottes où la torche Ensanglante une épaisse nuit, Où l'écho fait, de porche en porche, Un grand soupir du moindre bruit. Les stalactites à la voûte Pendent en pleurs pétrifiés Dont l'humidité, goutte à goutte, Tombe lentement à mes pieds. Il me semble qu'en ces ténèbres Règne une douloureuse paix ; Et devant ces longs pleurs funèbres Suspendus sans sécher jamais, Je pense aux âmes affligées Où dorment d'anciennes amours : Toutes les larmes sont figées, Quelque chose y pleure toujours.

Amo las grutas donde espesa noche Alumbra el rayo de rojiza antorcha, Y donde el eco se dilata, crece, Y hace un gran ruido de una débil nota. Como brillantes lágrimas de piedra Vénse allí estalactitas en la bóveda,. Cuya humedad, en llanto silencioso, Lentamente á mis pies cae gota á gota. Paréceme que en medio á las tinieblas Reina una paz solemne y dolorosa; Y ante aquel llanto que el recinto habita, Fúnebre llanto que sin tregua brota, Me acuerdo de las almas afligidas Donde antiguos amores aún reposan: Las lágrimas están cristalizadas, Pero algo queda allí que siempre llora.
