When the moonlight is still shining Gently upon the mountain, And already through the treetops A cool breath of morning passes, Oh, how lovely it is to walk Through the dark, silent valley, Oh, how all anxieties Flee into the distance! See, only here and there a radiance Rises from out of the darkness, As if God's eyes were gazing Beautifully, amiably downward. And now again it lies there, -- Oh, you sweet, sweet image! -- Brightly spread over the ground Almost like gentle sunshine! Dear soul, how at ease, Oh, how at ease do you feel there, Everything is now forgotten Of past grievances! And whatever may come in future, Never let it assail you, God in Heaven shall look after it, -- You simply travel your pathway happily.
