Über hartgefrorne Felder,
Fürchte, nimmer heimzukommen.

O du Trunkenheit der Schmerzen,
Wenn der Wonnekelch zerschlagen,
Lieber will ich dich im Herzen
Als so halbe Lust ertragen.

Nur das Böseste und Beste
Mag die arme Seele hegen,
Seien's Schmerzen, seien's Feste --
Denn sie glüht des Glühens wegen.

Una altra vegada dringa una festa en una trencadissa
i jo camino vacil·lant angoixat de por
per camps tots glaçats,
tement de no arribar mai a casa.

Oh embriaguesa del dolor,
quan es trenca el calze de la benaurança,
m’estimo més de tenir-te al cor
que de suportar un goig desesmat.

Tan sols el pitjor i el millor
poden tenir cura de la pobre ànima,
siguin dolors o festes,
car ella fulgura per fulgurar.
