Und ich taumle angstbeklommen
Über hartgefrorne Felder,
Fürchte, nimmer heimzukommen.

O du Trunkenheit der Schmerzen,
Wenn der Wonnekelch zerschlagen,
Lieber will ich dich im Herzen
Als so halbe Lust ertragen.

Nur das Böseste und Beste
Mag die arme Seele hegen,
Seien's Schmerzen, seien's Feste --
Denn sie glüht des Glühens wegen.

Sur des champs pétrifiés par le gel,
Craignant de ne jamais rentrer à la maison.

Ô ivresse de la douleur,
Quand se brise la coupe de la félicité,
Je préfère t'avoir au cœur
Plutôt que de supporter un demi plaisir.

Seuls le pire et le meilleur
Peuvent nourrir la pauvre âme,
Qu'ils soient douleur ou fête,
Car elle brûle pour brûler.
