O, schmäht des Lebens Leiden nicht!
Seht ihr die Blätter, wenn sie sterben, 
Sich in des Herbstes goldenem Licht
Nicht reicher, als im Frühling färben?
Was gleicht der Blüte des Vergehens
Im Hauche des Oktoberwehens?

Krystallner als die klarste Flut
Erglänzt des Auges Tränenquelle, 
Tief dunkler flammt die Abendglut, 
Als hoch am Tag die Sonnenhelle, 
Und keiner kußt so heissen Kuß, 
Als wer für ewig scheiden muß.

Dans la lumière dorée de l'automne,
N'ont-elles pas de plus riches couleurs qu'au printemps ?
A quoi ressemble le summum de la disparition
Dans le souffle des brises d'octobre ?

Plus cristalline que le flot le plus clair,
La source des larmes fait briller les yeux.
Les braises du soir s'enflamment plus sombrement
Que la clarté du soleil au plus haut du ciel,
Et personne n'embrasse d'un baiser aussi ardent
Que lorsque la séparation est pour toujours.
