by Theophilus Julius Henry Marzials (1850 - 1920)
Translation Singable translation by Helen Dellenbauch Tretbar (1835 - 1902)

Von schön Sicilien war mein Traum
Language: German (Deutsch)
Von schön Sicilien war mein Traum,
in Blüthen strahlt der Hag!
Wir sassen unter'm Citronenbaum
und kosten Tag für Tag.

Erwachend umgab mich des Nordens Land,
ein einsam Grab lag dort am Meer,
der Sturmwind rüttelt das Epheuband
das einst ich geflochten lange her!

I dream'd I was in Sicily
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I dream'd I was in Sicily
All sky and hills and flowers
We sat us under a citron tree
And courtes hours and hours.

I woke in the dunes of a bleak northland,
Along a lonely grave in the snow,
The salt wind rattled the ivy band
I'd tied at the headstone long ago.

From the Van der Stucken score
