Vor Sehnsucht ich konnte nicht schlafen, ein Blumenhauch füllte die Luft, strömte herein durch die Fenster wie ein Fluss von berauschender Duft. Ich hörte die hohen Palmen säuseln sacht' mit süssem Sang; ein Flüstern rings um mir entgegen klang: Sakuntala, Sakuntala. Du ewiger Himalaya, dess' Stirne strahlt in Sonnengluth, warum sendest du heut' mir entgegen wohl deiner Quellen Fluth? Warum rieseln die duftenden Wogen erinn'rungsvoll an mir vorbei? Warum trifft doch mein bebender Blick auf's neu: Sakuntala! Sakuntala! O Mädchen, du senkst in meinen Blick dein Auge so weich und so feucht, als wär' dir in dieser Stunde der bindende Ring gereicht! Ach, nicht eine einzelne Stunde, nicht ein Tag, Jahrtausende schon sind zwischen uns beide längst entfloh'n: Sakuntala, Sakuntala! Nicht dir fiel der Ring in die Fluthen Dushjántas selbst warf ihn hinein, und könnt' er auch stillen den wilden Strom, der Ring wird verloren doch sein. Dushjántas geht zu jagen in den Palmenhain am Fluss; trifft eine Antilop' sein Schuss: Sakuntala, Sakuntala.
