by Peter Cornelius (1824 - 1874)

Lass mich deine Augen fragen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ob mein Mund auch dürfte nimmer
Liebesworte zu dir wagen,
Dürft' ich nur der Blicke Schimmer,
Dürft' ich deine Augen fragen.

Dir in Augen möchte ich lesen,
Forschen, wie in heil'gen Sagen,
Ob auf Sternen du gewesen
Eh' die Erde dich getragen?

Ach, ein Wort schafft hohe Wonne
Und ein Wort kann Wunden schlagen;
Lass aus deiner Augen Sonne
Nicht die Lippe mich verjagen.

Nie wird Eden leuchtend helle,
Nie mir deine Seele tragen;
Lass mich lauschen an der Schwelle,
Lass mich deine Augen fragen!
