Heute tatest du mir weh.
Rings um uns war Schweigen nur,
Schweigen nur und Schnee.
Himmel war, nicht wie Azur,
blau jedoch und voll mit Sternen.
Windeslied erklang aus fernsten Fernen.

Heute warst du mir ein Schmerz.
Häuser waren da, so weiß verschneit,
alle in des Winters Kleid.
Ein Akkord in tiefer Terz
War in unsrer Schritte Klang.
Bahnsirenen heulten lang . . .

Heute war es wunderschön.
Schön wie tiefverschneite Höh'n,
eingetaucht in Abendglutenring.

Heute tatest du mir weh.
Heute sagtest du mir: geh!
Und ich - ging.

Today you hurt me.
Round about us was only silence,
Only silence and snow.
The sky was not like azure,
nevertheless blue and full of stars.
The song of wind sounded from the most distant distances.

Today you caused me pain.
There were houses, so whitely snow-covered,
all in the garb of winter.
A chord in deep thirds
Was in the sound of our steps.
Train sirens howled long . . . 

Today it was wondrously beautiful.
As beautiful as heights covered with deep snow,
dipped into the ring of the evening glow.

Today you hurt me.
Today you said to me: go!
And I -- went.
