Wir saßen noch und starrten, müd vom Wein,
Schwül kam der Wind durchs offne Tor herein,
Im Garten stand der Tod.
Du deinen Weg, ich meinen, gingen wir
Schweigend hinweg und suchten Nachtquartier,
Die Freude war verloht.
Und seither tönt der Nachtwind mir im Ohr
Von damals, und an jedem Weg und Tor
Steht immer noch der Tod.

La llum dels cavallets de fira s’ha apagat,
s’ha acabat el ball, la música s’ha esvanit,
la taula és vermella del vi.
Sèiem encara i miràvem fixament, fatigats pel vi,
xafogós, entrà el vent per la porta oberta,
al jardí hi havia la mort.
Marxàrem, tu pel teu camí, jo pel meu,
silenciosament, i cercàrem allotjament per la nit,
la joia s’havia extingit.
I des d’aleshores, el vent de la nit em parla a l’orella
d’aquell dia, i a cada camí i a cada porta
encara hi ha sempre la mort.
