In diesen Nächten schlaf ich nicht. Mein Herz wird jung, Aus blauen Tiefen der Erinnerung Steigt meiner Jugend heißes Glück, Schaut mir so nahe ins Gesicht, Erschrickt, und flieht zurück. Bleib still, bleib still, mein Herz! Ob auch im Blute eng und schwer Die Leidenschaft sich rührt Und dich die alten Wege führt -- Nicht jugendwärts Gehn deine Wege mehr.

Das Karussell war in der Nacht verglüht, Der Tanz zu Ende, die Musik versprüht, Vom Wein die Tafel rot. Wir saßen noch und starrten, müd vom Wein, Schwül kam der Wind durchs offne Tor herein, Im Garten stand der Tod. Du deinen Weg, ich meinen, gingen wir Schweigend hinweg und suchten Nachtquartier, Die Freude war verloht. Und seither tönt der Nachtwind mir im Ohr Von damals, und an jedem Weg und Tor Steht immer noch der Tod.
