Im Lenze
Language: German (Deutsch)
Es träumt die Welt den Frühlingstraum;
Sie prangt im Brautgeschmeide.
Im Garten blüht der Kirschenbaum,
Der Ginster auf der Haide.
O sieh, o sieh, wie himmelwärts
Die muntern Lerchen steigen!
Vergiß den Schmerz, du trübes Herz,
Und laß die Klagen schweigen.
Die Erde in Entzücken bebt.
O sel'ge Frühlingsfeier!
Selbst um die Todtenhügel webt
Der Lenz den Blüthenschleier.
Es ist, als ob der Todten Hand
Uns böt' die Blumenkränze,
Als kläng' es aus dem Geisterland:
Seid fröhlich in dem Lenze!
O, freu' dich, Herz, im Sonnenglanz,
Genieß die kurzen Stunden!
Für jeden hat den frischen Kranz
Des Lenzes Hand gewunden.
Die Schwalbe hoch im Blauen zieht
Und lustig rauscht der Bronnen. --
Vergiß, mein Herz, das trübe Lied
Von den gesunknen Sonnen!

In springtime
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The world is dreaming the dream of spring,
It stands resplendent in its bridal adornment.
In the garden the cherry tree is blossoming,
The gorse upon the heath.
Oh see, oh see, how heavenward
The merry larks are ascending!
Forget your pain, you dull heart,
And let your laments fall silent.
The world is trembling in rapture.
Oh blessed springtime celebration!
Even around the burial mounds, spring
Is weaving the veil of blossoms.
It is as if the hands of the dead
Were offering us flowery wreaths,
As if, from the land of spirits, there sounded
[The command to] be joyful in springtime!
Oh heart, be joyful in the radiance of the sun,
Savour the short hours!
The hand of springtime has twined
A fresh wreath for every person.
The swallow travels high in the blue
And the well-spring gushes merrily. --
My heart, forget the dreary song
Of the suns that have set!
