Im Schacht der Adern und der Stufen 
fahr' ich hinab, steig' ich empor, 
und meines Hammers ernstes Rufen 
lockt mir gehaltig Erz hervor.

Es geht aus meiner Hand in andre, 
mir dauert nur der alte Trieb; 
was ich erwarb, wohin es wandre, 
ich frage wenig, wo es blieb.

Nun sitz' ich Festtags hier im Tale, 
ein Goldschmied kommt, ein feiner Mann, 
und beut in köstlichstem Pokale 
aus Gunsten einen Trunk mir an.

Und da mein Mund aus goldnem Becher 
die goldne Welle durstig schlürft, 
spricht er mit Lächeln: "Alter Zecher, 
das ist vom Erz, das du geschürft."

Nelle profondità della miniera e sui gradini,
vado e vengo su e giù,
e il primo colpo del mio martello
chiama a me il metallo prezioso.
 
Esso va dalle mie in altre mani,
a me resta solo la vecchia fatica;
ciò che io ho tirato fuori, dove vada,
o dove sia, poco mi importa.
 
Ora, mentre sto nei giorni di festa qui nella valle,
viene un orefice, un uomo distinto,
e mi offre nella coppa più preziosa
una bevanda di grande squisitezza.
 
E appena la mia bocca dall'aurea coppa
beve assetata l'onda d'oro,
egli mi dice sorridendo: "Vecchio bevitore,
questo è il metallo che tu hai estratto".
