Still war's, wie jetzt im Laube;
Fernher nur hört' ich durch Rankengeflecht
Die Schläge der Axt und den pickenden Specht
Und das Girren der wilden Taube.

O Träume, schön wie Märchen der Feen,
Umschwebten mich dort, wenn beim Abendwehn
Ich ruht' am Felsenhange;
Und vor mir lag, wie im Traum ich's sah,
Voll goldener Schlösser das Leben da -
So lange das her, so lange!

Aus der Welt da draußen nun kehr' ich zurück;
Wie Märchen alles dahin: das Glück
Und Hoffen und Lieb' und Glaube!
Im Walde lieg' ich, wie einst ich lag,
Und höre von ferne der Aexte Schlag
Und das Girren der wilden Taube.

Enfant, c'est là que j'ai vagabondé

Et cueilli les baies qui mûrissent sur les talus ;
Comme aujourd'hui le calme régnait dans les feuillages ;
Au loin, derrière les sarments, je n'entendais
Que les coups de hache et le picorage du pic,
Et le roucoulement du pigeon sauvage.

Ô rêves, beaux comme des contes de fées.
Vous m'entouriez là-bas, lorsqu'à la brise du soir
Je me reposais sur les pentes rocheuses ;
Et devant moi s'étendait, comme vue en rêve,
La vie emplie de châteaux dorés .
Il y a si longtemps de cela, si longtemps !

Aujourd'hui je suis revenu de ce monde lointain ;
Comme dans les contes, tout a disparu : le bonheur,
