Im Westen stirbt die Sonne,
   Vergießt ihr schönes Blut,
Des Tages lichte Wonne
   Versinkt mit ihrer Glut.

Als sie heut aufgestiegen,
   Sah sie in meinem Arm
Noch den Geliebten liegen,
   Von Schlaf und Liebe warm.

Hat mir auch nichts als Kummer
   Der helle Tag gebracht,
Mehr fürcht' ich noch den Schlummer,
   Die schwarzumflorte Nacht.

Sie schleicht auf leisen Füßen
   Den dunklen Wolkenpfad
Und beugt sich auf mein Kissen:
   Wo ist dein Kamerad?

À l'ouest, le soleil se meurt
    répand la beauté de son sang,
Le bonheur lumineux du jour
    s'abîme dans ses braises.

Quand aujourd'hui il s'est levé,
    Il a vu dans mes bras
Mon bien-aimé encore étendu
    Chaud de sommeil et d'amour.

Mais ce ne sont que chagrins
    Apportés par cette claire journée,
Et je redoute encore plus le sommeil,
    Cette nuit voilée de noir.

Elle se glisse à pas feutrés
    Sur un sombre chemin de nuages
Et, se penchant sur mon oreiller :
    Où est ton compagnon ?¹
