Bølgerne ruller så tungt ved nat
langt ude på havsens vande. -
Der vifter ei vind, og der er intet seil,
der glimter ei stjerner i sjøens speil; -
men der driver lig mod strande.

Der flyder i natten et lysende skjær
histude på havsens vande.
Der driver en kvinde i silkerig dragt
med armene stivt over sjøerne strakt; -
et lig, som driver mod strande.

Men rinder da solen ved vinterdag
så rød over havsens vande,
da ligger en strime med skum igjen
og gynger hvid iver sjøene hen,
mens der driver lig mod strande.

Après la tempête

Les vagues ont roulé si fort durant la nuit,
loin au large, sur les eaux de la mer.
Le vent ne souffle plus, et il n'y a aucune voile,
Aucune étoile ne brille sur le miroir de la mer ;
mais un corps dérive vers le rivage.

Dans la nuit flotte une lueur,
là-bas, sur les eaux de la mer.
Une femme dérive, vêtue de soie,
les bras raidis étendus sur l'eau ;
un corps qui dérive vers la plage.

Mais le soleil coule sur ce jour d'hiver,
si rouge sur les eaux de la mer,
quand s'étend encore une tache de mousse
blanche qui s'éloigne en se balançant,
pendant qu'un corps dérive vers le rivage.
