Adelheid
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Und ich sitz' am offnen Fenster
Blickend in die Nacht hinaus;
Drüben glänzen noch die Lichter
In dem heißgeliebten Haus'.

Alles ist so still und ruhig,
Nur die Lüft' und Wolken zieh'n.
Alles ist so kalt und schweigsam,
Und nur meine Schmerzen glüh'n. --

Gebt, o gebt mir, heil'ge Sterne
Einen Strahl und einen Laut,
Daß, wenn ich den Laut ihr sende,
Sich der Strahl zur Brücke baut;

Daß er ihr allein verständlich,
Daß er ihr nur sichtbar ist,
Daß sie im Gebet des Abends
Ihre Sängers nicht vergißt!

Adelheid
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
And I sit by the open window
Gazing out into the night;
Above, lights still glitter
In the warm, loving house.

Everything is so quiet and peaceful,
Only the breezes and clouds yet move.
Everything is so cold and silent,
And only my pains still glow.

Give, O give me, holy stars,
A glimmer and a sound;
That, when I echo back the sound
You can craft a bridge from the light;

So that to you alone is it intelligible,
That only for you is it visible,
And so that when prayers are made at evening,
Their creators are not forgotten.
