Wenn die Sonne heut
Mit müden Schritt aus unsrer Flur gegangen,
Erwart' ich dich.
In wildem Geisblatt birgt sich eine Bank
Im Waldesgrund, rings Buchengrün und Farren,
Dort find'st du mich!
Dort rufe nicht! Geh heimlich durch das Laub,
Daß nicht die Vögel aus dem Schlummer schrecken
In ihrem Nest,
Daß nicht der Wind erwacht, der athemlos
Vom tollen Lauf, betäubt und sonnenmüde
Schläft im Geäst.
Leis lachend reck' ich meine Hände aus
Und ziehe dich durch das Gewirr der Ranken
Zu mir herein,
Verträumte Blüthen nicken über uns,
Grüngoldne Dämmrung spinnt mit weichem Schleier
Uns Beide ein.
Dann küsse mich! Sieh, meine Seele schläft,
Ein willenloses Kind auf meinen Lippen --
Dein ist die Macht!
Reiß sie empor aus ihrem dumpfen Traum,
Laß sie hineinschaun in das heiße Leben
Und dann -- sei Nacht!

De son pas fatigué aura quitté notre terre,

Dans le chèvrefeuille sauvage se cache un banc,
Dans la forêt, entouré de hêtres et de bouvillons,
Là bas, tu me trouveras.
Là bas, n'appelle pas ! Avance en catimini dans le feuillage,
Afin de ne pas effrayer les oiseaux qui dorment
Dans leurs nids.
Afin de ne pas réveiller le vent, essoufflé
Par une course folle, endormi dans les branches,
Assommé et abruti de soleil
Avec un petit sourire, je tendrai ma main
Et dans l'enchevêtrement des tiges, je t'attirerai
Vers moi.
Perdues dans leur rêves, des fleurs somnolent au dessus de nous,
Un crépuscule vert et or tisse un douillet voile
Autour de nous deux.
Et puis embrasse-moi ! Vois, mon cœur est endormi,
Comme un enfant sans volonté sur mes lèvres --
Toi, tu es fort !
Arrache-le de son rêve confus,
Fais-lui voir la vie torride
Et puis -- que soit la nuit !
