Wie schlafend unterm Flügel ein Pfau den Schnabel hält,
Von luft'gen Vogelträumen die blaue Brust geschwellt,
Geduckt auf einem Fuße, dann plötzlich oft einmal,
Im Traume phantasierend, das Funkelrad er stellt:
So hing betäubt und trunken, ausreckend Berg und Tal,
Der große Wundervogel in tiefem Schlaf, die Welt;
So schwoll der blaue Himmel von Träumen ohne Zahl,
Mit leisem Knistern schlug er ein Rad, das Sternenzelt.

Comme un paon endormi cache son bec sous son aile
se tenant sur une patte, son pourpoint bleu dilaté
par des rêves d'oiseau planant, puis soudain transporté
dans la fantasmagorie de sa roue éblouissante :
ainsi, dans un sourd enivrement, s'étirant sur monts et vaux,
est suspendu le monde, vaste oiseau magique dans son profond sommeil ;
ainsi le ciel bleu s'est-il dilaté de rêves sans nombre,
et, avec un léger crépitement, a heurté la roue, domaine des étoiles.
