Il y a de nombreux bacs sur les rivières, et l'un d'eux le portera sûrement ; mais je ne peux l'embrasser quand il passera. Dehors c'était le mois de mai. Sur notre vieille commode brûlaient deux chandelles ; la mère parlait avec la mort, et sa voix se brisait en morceaux. Et je me tenais tout petit en silence, je n'atteignis pas la terre étrangère que ma mère percevait avec crainte, je me dressais seulement jusqu'au bord du lit, trouvant uniquement sa main pâle, de qui je reçus sa bénédiction. Mais mon père, fou de douleur, me souleva jusqu'à la bouche de ma mère, qui me prit la bénédiction.
