Die Luft ist blau, das Thal ist grün,
Die kleinen Maienklocken blühn,
Und Schlüsselblumen drunter;
Der Wiesengrund
Ist schon so bunt,
Und malt sich täglich bunter.

Drum komme, wem der Mai gefällt,
Und [schaue froh die schöne]1 Welt
Und Gottes Vatergüte,
Die solche Pracht
Hervorgebracht,
Den Baum und seine Blüte.

Note: This is the version as published by Voß. The initial version of this poem, according to Hölty's manuscript, is quite different. It has the title "Maylied" and begins with "Der Anger steht so grün ..." (see below).

Die Zweige wieder schießen, 
Der Himmel sonnig blaut, 
Die Erde still zu grüßen, 
Die nun des Maien Braut. 
Es blüht der Wald, es blüht das Feld, 
Zum Paradiese wird die Welt 
Im Maien.

Durch jedes Fenster steigen 
Die warmen Lüfte ein, 
Die Blumen still sich neigen 
Im gold'nen Sonnenschein. 
Zum Herzen zieht der Herrgott ein, 
Daß es voll Grün und Sonnenschein 
Im Maien.

Ist immer nur dasselbe,
Ist nur: [Vergißmeinnicht]6.

Wenn ich zwei Äuglein sehe
So heiter und so blau,
So denk' ich an mein Blümchen
Auf [unsrer]4 grünen Au.

Da kann [ich auch]7 nicht reden
Und nur mein Herze spricht,
So bange nur, so leise,
Und nur: Vergißmeinnicht.
