  Die Perle wahrend im Gehäuse,
Das seinen Schatz [umfangen]1 hält,
So schifft die stille Muschel leise
Durch's tiefe Wogenmeer der Welt.

  Der Muschel gleichen meine Lieder,
Von [einer Thräne]2 sind sie schwer,
Und leise zieh'n sie auf und nieder
Durch meiner Schmerzen tiefes Meer.

In meinem Gärtchen lachet
Manch Blümlein klar und roth,
Vor allen aber machet
Die brennende Liebe
Mir Noth.

Wohin ich mich nur wende,
Steht auch die helle Blum';
Es glühet sonder Ende
Die brennende Liebe
Ringsum.

Die schlimmen Nachbarinnen,
Die bleiben neidvoll stehn
Und flüstern: "Ach, da drinnen
Blüht brennende Liebe
So schön!"

Brauch' ihrer nicht zu warten,
Sie sprießet Tag und Nacht;
Wer hat mir doch zum Garten
Die brennende Liebe
Gebracht?

Von Wasserblumen zugedeckt;
Ihr Vöglein hoch im [Fichtenbaum]3,
Daß ihr [mir]4 nicht den Schläfer weckt!

Doch leise weht das Schilf und wiegt 
Das Haupt mit leichtem Sinn;
Ein blauer Falter aber fliegt
Darüber einsam hin!
