Le vent d’automne secoue les arbres, la nuit est humide et froide ; enveloppé d’un manteau gris, je traverse à cheval le bois. Et tandis que je chevauche, mes pensées galopent devant moi ; elles me portent léger et joyeux à la maison de ma bien-aimée. Les chiens aboient, les valets paraissent avec des flambeaux ; je gravis l’escalier de marbre en faisant retentir mes éperons sonores. Dans une chambre garnie de tapis et brillamment éclairée, au milieu d’une atmosphère tiède et parfumée, ma bien-aimée m’attend. Je me précipite dans ses bras. Le vent murmure dans les feuilles, le chêne chuchote dans ses rameaux : « Que veux-tu, fou cavalier, avec ton rêve insensé ? »
