3 Mélodies

Song Cycle by Edmond Berger

2. Les papillons  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: French (Français)
Les papillons couleur de neige
Volent par essaims sur la mer ;
Beaux papillons blancs, quand pourrai-je
Prendre le bleu chemin de l'air ?

Savez-vous, ô belle des belles,
Ma bayadère aux yeux de jais,
S'ils me [pouvaient]1 prêter leurs ailes,
Dites, savez-vous où j'irais ?

Sans prendre un seul baiser aux roses,
À travers vallons et forêts,
J'irais à vos lèvres mi-closes,
Fleur de mon âme, et j'y mourrais.

  • by Pierre-Jules-Théophile Gautier (1811 - 1872), title 1: "Les papillons", title 2: "Pantoum", written 1837, appears in La Comédie de la Mort, first published 1838

3. L'esclave  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: French (Français)
Captive et peut-être oubliée,
Je songe à mes jeunes amours,
          À mes beaux jours,
Et par la fenêtre grillée
Je regarde l'oiseau joyeux
          Fendant les cieux.

Douce et pâle consolatrice,
Espérance, rayon d'en haut,
          Dans mon cachot
Fais-moi, sous ta clarté propice,
À ton miroir faux et charmant
          Voir mon amant !

Auprès de lui, belle Espérance,
Porte-moi sur tes ailes d'or,
          S'il m'aime encor,
Et, pour endormir ma souffrance,
Suspends mon âme sur son cœur
          Comme une fleur !

Text Authorship:

  • by Pierre-Jules-Théophile Gautier (1811 - 1872), "L'esclave", written 1840, appears in Poésies diverses, poésies nouvelles et inédites, poésies posthumes, in Poésies diverses 1838-1845
