De vells contes em fa signes una mà blanca, on es canta i es fa sonar d'un país de meravelles; on floreixen acolorides poncelles en la daurada llum del capvespre, i, flairant dolçament, resplendeixen amb rostre de núvia; i verds arbres canten melodies d'un temps remot, l'oreig es fa sentir furtiu i, amb ell, refilen els ocells; i figures nebuloses s'alcen de la terra, i ballen airoses rotllanes en estranys cors; i espurnes blaves cremen en totes les fulles i branques, i llums roges corren en folls, confusos cercles; i fonts sorolloses brollen de feréstecs blocs de marbre i, estrany, reflecteix el besllum en els rierols. Ai! Si jo podés arribar-hi i allà alegrar el meu cor, i, alleujat de tot turment, ser lliure i feliç! Ah! Aquell és el país de delícies que sovint veig en somnis, però quan surt el sol de matinada, es desfà com si fos escuma.
