Ich bin auch in Ravenna gewesen, Ist eine kleine, tote Stadt, Die Kirchen und viel Ruinen hat, Man kann davon in den Büchern lesen. Du gehst hindurch und schaust dich um, Die Straßen sind so trüb und naß Und sind so tausendjährig stumm, Und überall wächst Moos und Gras! Das ist wie alte Lieder sind, Man hört sie an und keiner lacht Ein jeder lauscht und jeder sinnt Hernach daran bis in die Nacht.

Je suis aussi allé à Ravenne, C'est une petite ville morte, Qui a des églises et beaucoup de ruines, On peut le lire dans les livres. Quand tu te promènes et regardes autour de toi, Les rues sont mornes et humides Et sont muettes depuis des millénaires, Et partout pousse la mousse et l'herbe ! C'est comme les vieilles chansons, On les écoute et personne ne rit, L'un prête l'oreille et l'autre pense À elles après coup, jusqu'à la nuit.

Die Frauen von Ravenna tragen Mit tiefem Blick und zarter Geste In sich ein Wissen von den Tagen Der alten Stadt und ihrer Feste. Die Frauen von Ravenna weinen Wie stille Kinder: tief und leise. Und wenn sie lachen, will es scheinen Zu trübem Text die helle Weise. Die Frauen von Ravenna beten Wie Kinder: sanft und voll Genügen. Sie können Liebesworte reden Und selbst nicht wissen, daß sie lügen. Die Frauen von Ravenna küssen Seltsam und tief und hingegeben. Und ihnen allen ist vom Leben Nichts kund, als daß wir sterben müssen.

Les femmes de Ravenne Au regard profond et au geste délicat Portent en elles un savoir des jours De l'ancienne ville et de ses fêtes. Les femmes de Ravenne pleurent Comme des enfants sages, fort et en silence, Et quand elles rient elles éclairent De façon limpide les textes confus. Les femmes de Ravenne prient Comme les enfants, avec quiétude et modestie. Elles peuvent dire des mots d'amour Sans savoir elles-mêmes qu'elles mentent. Les femmes de Ravenne embrassent Avec un abandon étrange et intense. Et à elles toutes, la vie N'a rien révélé, car nous devons tous mourir.
