English translations of Zwei Lieder für eine Altstimme und Klavierbegleitung, opus 16

by Heinz Sälter

1. Wie der stöhnende Wind durch die Nacht
 (Sung text)
by Heinz Sälter , "Wie der stöhnende Wind durch die Nacht ", op. 16 (Zwei Lieder für eine Altstimme und Klavierbegleitung) no. 1 (1949) [ alto and piano ]
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wie der stöhnende Wind durch die Nacht
Stürmt mein Verlangen nach dir,
Jede Sehnsucht ist aufgewacht --
O du, die mich krank gemacht,
Was weißt du von mir!
Leise lösch ich mein spätes Licht,
Fiebernde Stunden zu wachen,
Und die Nacht hat dein Angesicht,
Und der Wind, der von Liebe spricht,
Hat dein unvergeßliches Lachen!

Language: English
Like the moaning wind through the night
My yearning for you rages,
Every longing has awakened --
Oh you, who has made me ill,
What do you know of me!
Quietly I extinguish my late light,
To lie awake for feverish hours,
And night possesses your face,
And the wind, which speaks of love,
Possesses your unforgettable laughter!

2. Gang bei Nacht
 (Sung text)
by Heinz Sälter , "Gang bei Nacht ", op. 16 (Zwei Lieder für eine Altstimme und Klavierbegleitung) no. 2 (1950) [ alto and piano ]
Language: German (Deutsch)
Busch und Wiese, Feld und Baum
Stehen in begnügtem Schweigen,
Jeder ganz sich selbst zu eigen,
Jeder tief in seinem Traum.

Wolke schwebt und lichter Stern,
Wie zu hoher Wacht berufen,
Und der Berg mit steilen Stufen
Türmt sich dunkel, hoch und fern.

Alles weilt und hat Bestand,
Ich allein mit meinen Schmerzen
Treibe fern von Gottes Herzen
Weiter ohne Sinn durchs Land.

2.
Language: English
Bush and meadow, field and tree
Stand in contented silence,
Each belonging utterly to itself,
Each deep in its dream.

The cloud drifts and the luminous star,
As if called to keep a lofty watch,
And the mountain with its steep steps
Towers darkly, high and distant.

Everything tarries and is lasting,
Only I with my pain
Drift far from the heart of God,
Meaninglessly onward through the land.
