English translations of Zwei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianoforte, opus 23

by Wilhelm Schauseil (1843 - 1892)

1. Mädchenlied  [sung text not yet checked]
by Wilhelm Schauseil (1843 - 1892), "Mädchenlied", op. 23 (Zwei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianoforte) no. 1, published 1890 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Siegel
Language: German (Deutsch)
[O]1 Blätter, dürre Blätter!
Wie trauert ihr so sehr!
Als ihr noch gabet grünen Schein --
Da war mein lieber Schatz noch mein,
Den hab' ich nimmermehr.

O Blätter, dürre Blätter!
Ihr habt ihn oft gesehn,
[Wie]2 er [mir Treu versprochen]3 hat -
Ach! kann [denn]4 Liebe wie ein Blatt
In einem Jahr vergehn?

O Blätter, dürre Blätter!
Es war ein falscher Knab';
Euch klag' ich es, ihr schweiget still,
Weil ich sonst niemand sagen will,
Wie lieb' ich ihn noch hab'!

1. O leaves, withered leaves
Language: English
 O leaves, withered leaves!
 How very mournful you are!
 When you still had a green gleam,
 my dear treasure still was mine -
 he whom I have no longer.

 O leaves, withered leaves!
 You had seen him so often,
 when he promised to be true -
 alas! can Love, like a leaf,
 pass away in only one year?

 O leaves, withered leaves!
 He was a false boy;
 If I lament to you, you will keep silent,
 for I will tell no one else
 how much I love him still.

2. Frage  [sung text not yet checked]
by Wilhelm Schauseil (1843 - 1892), "Frage", op. 23 (Zwei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianoforte) no. 2, published 1890 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Siegel
Language: German (Deutsch)
Eine Rose gepflückt! sie duftete ja
So süß und hold mir entgegen;
Als ich die blühende Rose sah,
Mußt' ich ans Herz mir sie legen.
Ist das denn Sünde?

Einen Kuß mir geraubt! der schwellende Mund,
Er lächelte Freuden und Liebe,
Als thät' er des Lebens Weisheit kund,
Da ward ich an ihm zum Diebe.
Ist das denn Sünde?

2. Question
Language: English
A rose picked! it wafted its scent
So sweetly and beautifully towards me;
When I saw the blooming rose,
I had to press it to my heart.
Is that a sin?

A stolen kiss! the swelling lips
Smiled, betokening joys and love,
As if they proclaimed life's wisdom;
Thus I became a thief [of kisses].
Is that a sin?
