Hörtest du denn nicht hinein, Daß Musik das Haus umschlich? Nacht war schwer und ohne Schein, Doch der sanft auf hartem Stein Lag und spielte, das war ich. Was ich konnte, sprach ich aus: "Liebste du, mein Alles Du!" Östlich brach [ein]1 Licht heraus, Schwerer Tag trieb mich nach Haus, Und mein Mund ist wieder zu.

Non la sentivi allora, la musica che in casa penetrava come un mormorio? Tutt'intorno la notte era greve ed oscura, ma chi sedeva mite sopra un pietra dura là fuori a suonare, quello ero io. Ciò che potevo, lo dicevo allora: "Sei tu il mio tutto, la mia sola amata!" Poi ad oriente comparve l'aurora il duro giorno mi spinse in casa ancora e la mia bocca fu di nuovo muta.

War der Himmel trüb und schwer, Waren einsam wir so sehr, Voneinander abgeschnitten! Aber das ist nun nicht mehr: Lüfte fließen hin und her; Und die ganze Welt inmitten Glänzt, als ob sie gläsern wär. Sterne kamen aufgegangen, Flimmern mein - und deinen Wangen, Und sie wissens auch: Stark und stärker wird ihr Prangen; Und wir atmen mit Verlangen, Liegen selig wie gefangen, Spüren eins des andern Hauch.

Fosco e opprimente era il cielo, ciascuno di noi stava solo, dall'altro ben separato! Ma ora tutto è cambiato: l'aria tutt'intorno ci vola; E il mondo intero lì al centro risplende come fosse di vetro. Le stelle stanno sorgendo, le guance si stanno infiammando, e sembrano avvertire attente: Il loro splendore crescente; Noi sospiriamo ardenti, felici l'uno all'altro legati, scambiamo i nostri fiati.
