O wunderbares, tiefes Schweigen, Wie einsam ist's noch auf der Welt! Die Wälder nur sich leise [neigen]1, Als ging' der Herr durchs stille Feld. Ich [fühl mich recht wie neu geschaffen]2, Wo ist die Sorge nun und Not? Was [mich noch gestern]3 wollt' erschlaffen, [Ich schäm' mich dess]4 im Morgenrot. Die Welt mit ihrem Gram und Glücke Will ich, ein Pilger, frohbereit Betreten nur [wie]5 eine Brücke Zu dir, Herr, [übern]6 Strom der Zeit. Und buhlt mein Lied, auf Weltgunst [lauernd]7, Um schnöden Sold der Eitelkeit: Zerschlag' mein Saitenspiel, und schauernd Schweig ich vor dir in Ewigkeit.

Ô, prodigieux, profond silence, Quelle solitude encore sur le monde ! Seules les forêt [s'inclinent]1 doucement Lorsque passe le Seigneur dans le champ silencieux. Je me sens comme si [je venais d'être créé]2, Où sont maintenant inquiétude et détresse ? Ce qui hier encore m'aurait affaibli Me fait honte devant cette aurore. Le monde, avec ses chagrins et bonheurs, Moi, pèlerin heureux, je suis prêt À le traverser juste comme un pont Franchissant le cours du temps, jusqu'à toi, Seigneur. Et si mon chant cherche à convoiter les faveurs du monde Pour le méprisable salaire de la vanité : Arrache les cordes de ma lyre, et tremblant Je resterai silencieux devant toi pour l'éternité.

Früh, [wann]1 die Hähne kräh'n, [Eh']2 die Sternlein [verschwinden]3, Muß ich am [Herde stehn]4, Muß Feuer zünden. Schön ist der [Flammen]5 Schein, [Es]6 springen die Funken. Ich schaue so [drein]7, In Leid versunken. Plötzlich, da kommt es mir, Treuloser Knabe, Daß ich die Nacht von dir Geträumet habe. Träne auf Träne dann Stürzet hernieder; So kommt der Tag heran - O ging' er wieder!

Der Lenz hat Rosen angezündet An Leuchtern von Smaragd im Dom; Und jede Seele schwillt und mündet Hinüber in den Opferstrom.

3. Fête de l'amour

Avec ses chants bigarrés l'alouette Grimpe avec bonheur dans les airs; Un allègre chœur de chanteurs s'égosille Dans la forêt, emplie de fleurs et de parfums. Là aussi loin que porte le regard, sont Érigés des autels de fête, Et tous ces milliers de cœurs carillonnent Pour la fête de l'amour, avec insistance et force. Le printemps a enflammé les roses Aux lumières d'émeraude de la cathédrale. Et chaque âme enfle et se jette Là-haut, dans le flot des offrandes.
