Uralte Bäume stehn,
In ihren hohen Kronen
Sind kaum die Vögel zu sehn.

Die Bäume mit hohen Kronen,
Die rauschen Tag und Nacht,
Die Wellen schlagen zum Strande,
Die Vöglein singen sacht.

Das gibt ein Musizieren
So süß, so traurig bang,
Als wie verlorner Liebe
Und ewiger Sehnsucht Sang.

Al jardí a la riba del llac
hi ha arbres vellíssims,
a llurs altes capçades
a penes es veuen els ocells.

Els arbres amb les altes capçades
remoregen dia i nit,
les ones rompen a la riba,
els ocellets canten fluixet.

Tot això fa una música
tan dolça, tan melangiosa,
com el cant d’un amor perdut
i d’una eterna nostàlgia.

Langsam und schimmernd fiel ein Regen,
In den die Abendsonne schien;
Der Wandrer schritt auf engen Wegen
Mit düstrer Seele drunter hin.

Er sah die großen Tropfen blinken
Im Fallen durch den goldnen Strahl;
Er fühlt' es kühl aufs Haupt ihm sinken
Und sprach mit schauernd süßer Qual:

Nun weiß ich, daß ein Regenbogen
Sich hoch um meine Stirne zieht,
Den auf dem Pfad, den ich gezogen,
Die heitre Ferne spielen sieht.

Und die mir hier am nächsten stehen,
Und wer mich scharf zu kennen meint,
Sie können selber doch nicht sehen,
Wie er versöhnend ob mir scheint.

So wird, wenn andre Tage kommen,
Die sonnig auf dies Heute sehn,
 Ob meinem fernen, bleichen Namen

Lenta i llostrejant queia una pluja,
en la que hi brillava el sol del capvespre;
per camins estrets passava al dessota
el caminant amb l’ànima ombrívola.

Veia les grosses gotes resplendir
tot davallant a través dels raigs daurats;
les sentia caure fresques damunt el seu cap
i fremint digué amb un dolç turment:

ara sé que un arc del cel
s’apareix damunt del meu front,
i que, en el camí que he agafat,
fàcilment pot veure la serena llunyania.

I els que aquí em són propers
i que creuen conèixer-me a fons,
ells mateixos no poden veure
com de conciliador llueix al meu damunt.

I així, quan vindran altres dies
i veuran el sol d’aquest avui,
damunt del meu nom, pàl·lid i llunyà,
l’arc del cel de l’honor romandrà.
