[Komm]1, Trost der Welt, du stille Nacht! Wie steigst du von den Bergen sacht, Die Lüfte alle schlafen, Ein Schiffer nur noch, wandermüd', Singt übers Meer sein Abendlied Zu Gottes Lob im Hafen. Die Jahre wie die Wolken gehn [Und]2 lassen mich hier einsam stehn, Die Welt hat mich vergessen, Da tratst du wunderbar zu mir, Wenn ich beim Waldesrauschen hier Gedankenvoll gesessen. O Trost der Welt, du stille Nacht! Der Tag hat mich so [müd']3 gemacht, Das weite Meer schon dunkelt, Laß ausruhn mich von Lust und Not, Bis daß das ew'ge Morgenrot Den stillen Wald durchfunkelt.

1. Vieni , notte silenziosa

Vieni notte silenziosa, conforto del mondo! Come placida discendi dai monti intorno, dorme ogni vento, solo un marinaio, stanco di vagare intona un canto serale verso il mare, lodando Dio nel porto. Come le nubi se ne vanno gli anni E qui mi lasciano in solitudine, il mondo mi ha dimenticato, ma sei venuta a me, meravigliosa, mentre fra lo stormire del bosco sedevo pensieroso. O notte silenziosa, conforto del mondo! Ormai mi ha reso stanco il giorno, già tutto si oscura il vasto mare, fa' che prenda riposo da gioia e dolore, finché l' aurora eterna per la silente selva non risplenda.

Ein Reiter durch das Bergtal zieht, Im traurig stillen Trab: "Ach! zieh ich [jetzt wohl]1 in Liebchens Arm, Oder zieh ich ins dunkle Grab?" Die Bergstimm Antwort gab: "Ins dunkle Grab!" Und weiter reitet der Reitersmann, Und seufzet schwer dazu: "[So zieh ich denn hin ins Grab so früh]2 — Wohlan, im Grab ist Ruh!" Die Stimme sprach dazu: "Im Grab ist Ruh!" Dem Reitersmann eine Träne rollt Von der [Wange]3 kummervoll: "Und ist nur im [Grab]4 die Ruhe für mich — So ist mir im Grabe wohl." Die [Stimme]5 erwidert hohl: "Im Grabe wohl!"
