Allnächtlich im Traume seh' ich dich
Und sehe dich freundlich grüßen,
Und laut aufweinend stürz' ich mich
Zu deinen süßen Füßen.

Du [siehst]1 mich an wehmütiglich
Und schüttelst das blonde Köpfchen;
Aus deinen Augen [schleichen sich  
Die Perlentränentröpfchen]2.

Du [sagst]3 mir heimlich ein leises Wort
Und gibst mir den Strauß von Zypressen.
Ich wache auf, und der Strauß ist fort,
[Und das]4 Wort hab' ich vergessen.

Ja ääneen itkien heittäydyn 
sinun suloisten jalkojesi juureen.

Sinä tuijotat minua alakuloisesti 
ja pudistat pientä vaaleaa päätäsi: 
sinun silmistäsi pusertuu 
pieniä kyynelhelmiä.

Sinä kuiskaat minulle hiljaa suloisen sanan 
ja annat minulle kimpun sypressejä. 
Minä herään, ja kimppu on poissa, 
ja sen sanan olen unohtanut.
