Le vaste mouvement des vagues les emporte, La brise les agite et les roule en ses plis ; Jouant dans le sillage, ils feront une escorte Aux vaisseaux que mon cœur dans leur fuite a suivis. Ivres d'air et de sel et brûlés par l'écume De la mer qui console et qui lave des pleurs Ils connaîtront le large et sa bonne amertume ; Les goélands perdus les prendront pour des leurs.

Das Meer ist unendlich und meine Träume sind wild. Das Meer besingt die Sonne indem es an die Steilküste schlägt Und meine flüchtigen Träume könnten sich nicht wohler fühlen, wie sie so übers Meer tanzen wie trunkene Vögel. Die ausladende Bewegung der Wellen trägt sie empor, der Wind treibt sie vorwärts und rollt sie in seine Falten. Im Kielwasser spielend bilden sie eine Eskorte für die Schiffe, denen mein Herz auf ihrer Flucht gefolgt ist. Trunken von Luft und Salz und verbrannt vom Schaum des Meeres, das tröstet und die Tränen abwäscht, werden sie die Weite und ihre heilende Bitternis erkennen; die verlorenen Möven werden sie für ihresgleichen halten.

Ich bin an Bord eines Schiffes gegangen, das tanzt
und von einer Seite zur andern schwankt und schaukelt und wiegt.
Meine Füße haben die Erde und ihre Wege vergessen,
die geschmeidigen Wellen haben mich andere Kadenzen gelehrt,
