Wenn auf dem höchsten Fels ich steh',
In's tiefe Thal hernieder seh'
Und singe,

Fern aus dem tiefen dunkeln Thal
Schwingt sich empor der Wiederhall
Der Klüfte.

Je weiter meine Stimme dringt,
Je heller sie mir wiederklingt
Von unten.

Mein Liebchen wohnt so weit von mir,

Når jeg står på den høyeste klippen
og skuer nedover i den dype dalen
og synger,

Fjernt fra den dype, mørke dalen
svinger ekkoet seg oppover,
ekkoet fra kløften. 

Jo lenger min stemme bærer,
jo klarere klinger den tilbake til meg
der nedenfra.

Min kjæreste bor så langt borte fra meg,
derfor lengter jeg så brennende etter henne,
dit bort.
