Umsonst nach einer Träne rang,
Die seine Qual entbinde,
Sprengt nun die Erde, die erstarrt
Von Reif und Frost gebunden ward,
Die eis'ge Winterrinde.

Durch Wald und Feld, um Berg und See
Sprießt wuchernd auf ihr altes Weh'
Und grünt in Zweig und Ranken
Und dunkelt in dem Himmelsblau
Und zittert in den Tropfen Tau,
Die an den Gräsern schwanken.

Nun, Gram um sie, die ich verlor,
Erstarrter, brich auch du hervor,
Um mit dem Strom zu fluten!
Im Blitz der Wolke sollst du glüh'n
Und mit den Nachtviolen blüh'n
Und in den Rosen bluten.

Uit de treurliederen

Zoals het hart doet, als het lang
Geen traan kon persen naar de wang,
- het dof verdriet, dat wint er -,
Breekt nu de aarde, die als glas
Door rijp en vorst steenachtig was,
De ijskorst van de winter.

In bos en veld, rond berg en meer
Schiet woek’rend op het oude zeer,
Komt in ’t groen hout tot leven;
Het donkert in het hemelblauw
En huivert in de druppels dauw
Die aan de grassen beven.

Nu, smart om haar die ik verloor,
Verstarde, breek ook jij eens door,
En word ook één der vloeden!
In wolkenweerlicht toon gegloei,
Met nachtviolen kom tot bloei,
Ga met de rozen bloeden.
