by Christoph August Tiedge (1752 - 1841)

Heil'ge Nacht! du führest deine Globen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Heil'ge Nacht! du führest deine Globen
Still und friedlich durch den Himmelsraum;
Wohnet Licht und Friede nur dort oben?
Ist hienieden alles Traum?
Traumgestalten gleich, dahingeschwunden
Sind, im wilden Kampfe des Gewühls,
Die erhabnen, großen Weihestunden
Unsers zartesten Gefühls.

Hat der edle Sieger welke Kränze,
Hat er Totenkränze nur gepflegt,
Die er, scheidend, an der öden Grenze
Dieses Lebens niederlegt?
Ruhe, dich! dich such' ich, holder Friede!
Suche dein Gestirn am Himmel auf;
Tief im Dunkel, tief verirrt und müde
Schließt dein Pilger seinen Lauf.
