Nun schreit' ich aus dem Tore
Ins weite, öde Feld,
Dort ist der große Kirchhof
Der alten Römerwelt.

Die ruht von Lieb' und Hasse,
Von Lust und Kampf und Strauß
Dort an der appischen Straße
Im Marmorgrabe aus.

Mich grüßt der Turm, vergüldet
Vom Abendsonnenstrahl,
Cäcilia Metella,
Dein trutzig Totenmal.

In seinen Trümmern steh' ich,
Den Blick gen Nord gewandt,
Da fliegen die Gedanken
Weit übers welsche Land

Zu einem andern Turme,
Der hat viel klein're Stein,
Am rebumrankten Fenster
Sitzt die Herzliebste mein.
