Vater, du glaubst es nicht, Wie's mir zum Herzen spricht, Wenn ich die Wolken seh', Oder am Strome steh', Wolkengold, Wellengrün Ziehen so leicht dahin, Weilen im Sonnenlicht, Aber bei Blumen nicht. Zögern und rasten nie, Eilen als wüßten sie Ferne und ungekannt Irgend ein schön'res Land. Ach! von Gewölk und Fluth Hat auch mein wildes Blut Heimlich geerbt den Drang, Stürmet die Welt entlang! Vaterlands Felsenthal Wird mir zu eng, zu schmal; Denn meiner Sehnsucht Traum Findet darin nicht Raum. Laßt mich! ich muss, ich muss Fordern den Scheidekuss. Vater und Mutter mein, Müsset nicht böse seyn: Hab' euch ja herzlich lieb, Aber ein wilder Trieb Jagt mich waldein waldaus, Weit von dem Vaterhaus. Sorgt nicht durch welches Land Einsam mein Weg sich wand, Monden- und Sternenschein Leuchtet auch dort hinein. Überall wölbt's Gefild' Sich den azurnen Schild, Den um die ganze Welt Schirmend der Schöpfer hält. Ach und wenn nimmermehr Ich zu euch wiederkehr', Lieben, so denkt er fand Glücklich das schön're Land.

Vader, je vat het niet, Hoezeer mijn hart geniet, Als 'k wolken gadesla Of aan het water sta. Wolkenvloot, golvenrij Trekken zo licht voorbij, Toeven in zonneschijn, Maar niet bij bloemgedein. Gaan zonder rust voorbij, IJlen, als wisten zij, Ver weg en onbekend, Ergens een mooier land. Wolken en watervloed Hebben mijn wilde bloed Heim'lijk bedeeld met drang: Storm langs de wereldwang! 't Vaderlands rotsendal Wordt mij te eng, te smal; Wat mijn verlangen droomt Wordt teveel ingetoomd. Laat mij! Ik moet, ik moet Vragen een afscheidsgroet. Vader en moeder mijn, Je moet niet boos nu zijn! 'k Heb j' in mijn hart gegrift; Echter een wilde drift Jaagt mij als windgedruis Ver van mijn vaders huis. Vrees niet door wat voor land Eenzaam mijn weg zich baant; Maanlicht en sterrenpracht Mind'ren ook daar de nacht. Overal welft het veld Zich naar 't azuren schild, Dat rond de wereldkloot Schuttend de Schepper houdt. Ach! En als nimmermeer Ik naar u wederkeer, Vrienden, bedenk: hij vond Veilig het mooi're land.
