Goldner du am Himmelsbogen,
Schenke mir die reiche Kette,
Gieb die Spangen mir und Bänder,
Die du den verliebten Wogen
Auf des Meeres Ruhebette
Schlingst um rauschende Gewänder.
Goldner du, den Schleier schimmernd,
Den um bunte Blumenträume
Deine weichen Nebel weben,
Glanzgestickt und perlenflimmernd,
Thaudurchduftet rings die Säume,
Goldner! Lass mich ihn umschweben!
Hülle du mich ein mit Funkeln,
Kette mir und Spangen lasse,
Licht um Haupt und Stirn mir winde,
Dass der Liebste mich im Dunkeln
Gleich erkenne, gleich umfasse,
Und zum Kuss die Lippen finde!

Golden one, you upon the arch of heaven,
Give to me your rich necklace,
Give the bracelets and the ribbons,
Which for the lovestruck waves
Upon the sea’s restful bed
You wind about their sweeping garments.
Golden one, you, the shimmering veil
That your mists weave
About the colourful dreams of flowers,
Embroidered with radiance and twinkling with pearls,
The hems scented through and through with dew,
Golden one! Let me hover about it!
You enclose me therein with sparkling,
Leave me the necklace and the bracelets,
Encircle my head and brow with light,
So that in the dark my beloved
Immediately recognizes me, immediately embraces me,
And finds my lips for his kiss!
