by Judith Gautier (1845 - 1917)
Translation by Stuart Merrill (1863 - 1915)

Les sages dansent
Language: French (Français)  after the Chinese (中文)
Dans ma flûte aux bouts de jade,
j'ai chanté une chanson aux humains ;
mais les humains ne m'ont pas compris.

Alors j'ai levé ma flûte vers le ciel,
et j'ai dit ma chanson aux Sages.

Les Sages se sont réjouis ;
ils ont dansé sur les nuages resplendissants ;

Et maintenant les humains me comprennent,
lorsque je chante en m'accompagnant
de ma flûte aux bouts de jade.

Chinese song
 (Sung text for setting by M. Lang)
 See original
Language: English  after the French (Français)
On my flute, tipped with jade,
I sang a song to mortals;
but the mortals did not understand.

Then I lifted my flute to the heavens,
and I sang my song to the Sages.

The Sages rejoiced together,
they danced on the glistening clouds.

And now mortals understand me,
when I sing to the sound
of my flute tipped with jade.
