Ein Brausen geht durch den sterbenden Wald,
 ... 
Das sind der Herbstnacht Stürme;
In Grauen gehüllt und in Dunkelheit,
Wie liegen die Lande so fremd und so weit!
Die Blätter fliegen tot und kalt,
Fern klingen die Glocken der Türme.

Zur wilden Jagd nach vergänglichem Gut
Drängt dort sich die eilige Menschenflut,
Die Brandung wächst in den Gassen,
Wer hört auf den schüttenden Glockenklang?
Er tönt die einsame Felder entlang
Hoch über den Köpfen der Massen.

Geflügelten Rades steuert die Zeit
Zermalmend fort über Lust und Leid
Durch ungemessene Fernen, -
Du lausche dem Klang mit gefühligem Ohr,
Erhebe den Blick zum Himmel empor,
Zu den rettenden ewigen Sternen!

Un mugissement va à travers la forêt mourante,
 ... 
Ce sont les tempêtes de la nuit d'automne ;
Enveloppées dans l'horreur et l'obscurité,
Comme les terres gisent si étrangères et si vastes !
Les feuilles volent mortes et froides,
Au loin les cloches de la tour sonnent.

Vers la chasse sauvage après les biens éphémères
Le flot pressé des hommes se précipite,
Le déferlement croît dans les rues,
Qui écoute le son des cloches se répandre ?
Il sonne le long des champs solitaires,
Haut au-dessus de la tête des masses.

Avec une roue à ailes le temps s'avance
En écrasant par dessus joie et chagrin
À travers des distances sans mesure,
Écoute le bruit avec une oreille sensible,
Lève ton regard vers les cieux,
Vers les étoiles éternelles qui sauvent !
