Wenn in des Abends letztem Scheine
  Dir eine lächelnde Gestalt,
Am Rasensitz im Eichenhaine,
  Mit Wink und Gruß vorüberwallt:
Das ist des Freundes treuer Geist,
Der Freud' und Frieden dir verheißt.

Wenn in des Mondes Dämmerlichte
  Sich deiner Liebe Traum verschönt,
Durch Cytisus und Weymuthsfichte
  Melodisches Gesäusel tönt,
Und Ahnung dir den Busen hebt:
Das ist mein Geist der dich umschwebt.

Fühlst du, beim seligen Verlieren
  In des Vergangnen Zauberland,
Ein lindes, geistiges Berühren,
  Wie Zephyrs Kuß, an Lipp' und Hand,
Und wankt der Kerze flatternd Licht:
Das ist mein Geist, o zweifle nicht!

Hörst du, beim Silberglanz der Sterne,
  Leis' im verschwiegnen Kämmerlein,
Gleich Aeolsharfen aus der Ferne,
  Das Bundeswort: Auf ewig dein!
Dann schlummre sanft; es ist mein Geist,
Der Freud' und Frieden dir verheißt.

Als in de laatste avondstralen
Jou op het gras in 't eikenwoud
Met knik en groet voorbij komt dwalen
Een lieve schim, die lacht vertrouwd:
Dat is je vriend, zijn geest is 't echt,
Die vreugd' en vrede jou toezegt.
 
Als in het scheem'rig maneschijnen
Je liefdesdroom aan schoonheid wint,
Door heidebrem en weymouthpijnen
Melodisch suiz'lend zingt de wind,
En hoop je hart meer ruimte geeft:
Dat is mijn geest die je omzweeft.
 
Voel je, bij 't zalige vervoeren
In het verleden toverland,
Een teder, onmerkbaar beroeren,
Als zefiers kus op lip en hand,
Terwijl de kaarsvlam licht verschiet:
Dat is mijn geest, o twijfel niet!
 
Wanneer, bij zilv'ren glans van sterren,
In 't stil vertrek zacht klinkt voor jou
- Eolusharpen zingen verre -,
Ons erewoord: Jou eeuwig trouw!,
Dan slaap maar zacht: mijn geest is 't echt,
Die vreugd' en vrede jou toezegt.
