O Geist der Liebe! führe du
Mir meine fromme Laura zu,
Mit ihr, bei dieser Sterne Schein
Der Schöpfung Gottes mich zu freun!
Above is the initial version of Matthisson's poem "Geist der Liebe". In the Breslau 1781 edition, the name Laura is changed to Maja (stanza 4, line 2); and in the Mannheim 1787 edition, the last stanza is as follows:
O Geist der Liebe, führe du
Dem Jüngling die Geliebte zu!
Ein süsser Blick der Lieb' erhellt
Mit Himmelsglanz die Erdenwelt!

L'esprit de l'amour est à l'œuvre et ourdit

Ô esprit de l'amour, que tu conduises
Ma douce Laura vers moi,
