Denk' es, o Seele!

Ein Tännlein grünet, wo,
Wer weiß, im Walde,
Ein Rosenstrauch, wer sagt,
In welchem Garten?
Sie sind erlesen schon,
Denk' es, o Seele!
Auf deinem Grab zu wurzeln
Und zu wachsen.

Zwei schwarze Rößlein weiden
Auf der Wiese,
Sie kehren heim zur Stadt
In muntren Sprüngen.
Sie werden schrittweis gehn
Mit deiner Leiche;
Vielleicht, vielleicht noch eh'
An ihren Hufen
Das Eisen los wird,
Das ich blitzen sehe!

Songes à cela, o mon âme !
 (Sung text translation for setting by H. Pfitzner)
 See original
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Un sapineau verdit, où ça,
qui le sait ! Quelque part dans la forêt,
et un buisson de roses, qui le dit,
quelque part dans un jardin ?
Ils sont déjà désignés,
 songe à cela, mon âme,
pour s’enraciner sur ta tombe
et y prospérer.

Deux poulains noirs paissent
dans la prairie ;
ils s’en retournent vers la ville
et caracolent joyeusement.
C’est eux qui iront au pas
portant ta dépouille ;
peut-être, peut-être même avant
d’avoir perdu le fer
que je vois briller
à leurs sabots.
